Convenience: These planes are small, relatively inexpensive, and easy to transport. They can be flown and landed in relatively small areas. Their low mass decreases crash damage.
Challange: These small planes are succeptable to wind and turbulance. They are less efficient than larger planes and require more flying skill. They can't get very high or far away without becoming difficult to see.
Old Timers: Due to their relatively high drag ratios, old timers fly slow and can be flown is smaller spaces. They do not handle the wind well. Their classic balsa construction and smooth, but antiquated, shapes are beautiful. While old time designs are less efficient then modern gliders, nothing beats watching an old timer working a thermal. You can actually sense the airfoil working. Most have wheels and can land gracefully by the side of the road or on a parking lot without damage.
