![]() 7/14/03 The season is settling into a pattern this year we could not have predicted, but that's why you go out and fly! Monday was another night of moderate winds giving barely sustainable lift, and therefore intriguing flying on the slope! Despite booming thermals, Dave was the only flier to hook a big one, Ron had the longest flight of 53 minutes by staying close to the hill's lip with his Chelsea. And then there is Randy, "Motor, we don't need no stinking motor" Morland who fried his motor and just sloped anyway. Bob made it with his flying wing, check out the pics! |

7/7/03 Ron and Randy made it Monday for a night of very low lift electric assisted sloping. One flight was 38 minutes with battery left, never getting over 20 feet high. It was reminiscent of last week ( see pics ) when Dave, John, and Ron had a classic quiet MEFFA sloping night. No pics today. Blue Skies

![]() Guts, Power, or Patience. Monday 6/23 session of MEFFA took all three!. Randy and Ron started the night on Guts. The wind was 15 MPH gusting to 25 MPH out of the NW far enough to give NASTY turbulence from over the dam to the spillway launch site. Their planes made multiple unplanned landings into the blessedly tall grass. Ron flew the little Kelly, and Randy flew his big white job. Randy finally smashed a wing, and Ron gave up contented with an intact plane. Next, Sean and Charlie sneered at the wind and turbulence thanks to two flying wings and a MEGA coreless motor. Their coroplast wing had to go 50 MPH and was solid, Sean's Zaggi was out of trim, but it didn't stop him from making some good flights. Dave finally taught patience, as at the end of the night, the wind dropped off and he was able to get in two 20+ minute nice and gentle flights with his Omega. Overall, as usual, the flying was unique to the particular night, Always seems to be an adventure! |
![]() MEFFA fliers were finally able to get together again Monday 6/16, after weeks of rain and wind. Six fliers showed on a night with near calm ESE winds and blue skies. Actually, the wind shifted all over depending on what the strong thermals were doing. And strong was the word. Ron lost a prop off his Chelsea ( AKA D'Rango...hated that name) 45 seconds into the flight, and while setting up a landing hooked a thermal and rode out an 11 minute flight. Dave easily broke the thermal duration record at 50 minutes with his Omega ( he purposely landed to keep the "record" in reach of other attempts) Charlie and his son Shaun flew a variety of brushless planes, Randy had his big white V-tail and a little Speed 280 sport plane, and BOB flew a new speed 400 pylon plane and his Starlight. More action than I can document! Finally we are flying! |
![]() To paraphrase BOB, it was a day of " stick and tissue, hi-tech composite, classic vintage, mock-vintage, foammie, brushlisswalmartwing/trash-tech fuse, slippery, chunky (maby the starlight will get a cowl), fast, slow, backwards ( somethjings don't work) 5 guy's flying MAGIC! We welcome Charlie as a figure out his own way MEFFA brother, revel if Randy flys powerless with a fried speed control, and the rest of us just loving the flying and friendship." |
![]() Dave and Ron continued the tradition of not letting the weather forecast deter them. They met at Whitney Point's South slope at 4:30. It was overcast but reasonably warm with a steady 10-12 MPH wind just to the east of the slope. Ron débuted his D'Rango, ( Drela-like home made fuse with Tango wings) and was ecstatic with its first flight. Needed one click of down and otherwise flew honestly with a docile stall and authoritative command. Dave got the Omega C flying and worked on his trim settings which have seemed off since his radio change last year. Despite this, the plane soared without power on the slope for 10 minutes then really showed it's legs as he opened up the motor and climbed for the low ceiling. Great flier! After 20 minutes both pilots were suffering cold thumbs, landed, and returned to Aiello's for food and catching up. |
